School Engagement Opportunities

Students in the School of Communication and Journalism are encouraged to become active participants in student organizations related to our programs, such as Eagle Eye, WEGL, the student chapters of Professional Journalists and the Public Relations Society of America, as well as The Oaks Agency, the Plainsman, and Auburn’s New Media club. You can learn more about these organizations on each program’s webpages. You may also consult with your CLA advisor or your program’s director for engagement opportunities.

AUinvolve provides a searchable list of all student organizations, while the AU Cross-Cultural Center for Excellence can help students learn about campus culture and heritage celebrations, and multicultural community organizations.

National and International Professional Organizations

Students are encouraged to explore and join national and international professional organizations to connect with others with similar communication interests, further their professional training and development, and build networking and leadership opportunities.

• The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is a organization made up by industry artists and leaders from across the globe. It provides support for young artists, underrepresented communities, film preservation, and other related aspects of cinema.
• The American Immigration Council seeks to shape perceptions of and acts toward immigrants and immigration.
• The Asian American Journalists Association provides a community for Asian American journalists through education, skills training and professional development programs.
• The Association of Latino Professionals For America offers professional development and career-building opportunities designed to empower and develop Latino men and women leaders.
• The Association of LGBTQ Journalists provides a community for LGBTQ journalists through the promotion of diversity principles, inclusion and leadership.
• The Coalition for Women Journalists fosters and supports camaraderie between women journalists around the globe.
• ColorComm (Women of Color in Communications) is the nation’s leading women’s platform addressing diversity and inclusion across the communications, marketing, advertising, and media industries.
• The Communications Media Management Association provides professional development and networking opportunities for its members.
• Delta Kappa Alpha, the nation’s oldest cinema society, works to provide professional growth and leadership for students interested in film, television, and related media.
• The Hispanic Alliance for Career Enhancement (HACE) is a national non-profit dedicated to the employment, development, and advancement of current and aspiring Latino professionals. Services include job boards and virtual career fairs.
• Independent Filmmaker Project connects independent filmmakers and media creators with essential resources, and industry influencers.
• The International Communication Association promotes scholarly study and academic research in communication across the world.
• In existence since 1938, the International Federation of Film Archives seeks to preserve and provided access to historical film.
• The Korean American Journalists Association shares news and information for the Korean-American community.
• MOSAIC, a Canadian nonprofit, serves immigrant, refugee, and migrant communities. Its annual Immigrant Professionals Conference provides training and skill development opportunities for immigrants and those who hire them.
• The National Association of Asian American Professionals is a non-profit organization that cultivates and empowers Asian and Pacific Islander leaders through leadership development, professional networking, and community service.
• The National Association of Black Journalists is an organization that provides services to advocate on behalf of black journalists. Aside from providing internships, awards and conventions, the organization’s website has a style guide relevant to its mission.
• The National Association of Hispanic Journalists is dedicated to providing professional advancement to Hispanic journalists. They promote fair treatment through resources, memberships, awards and events.
• The National Communication Association is the largest academic organization serving communication teachers, scholars and professionals.
• The NECS- European Network for Cinema and Media Studies is a non-profit organization whose goal is to connect scholars, archivists, programmers and practitioners who work and study cinema and media studies.
• Public Relations Society of America provides networking and professional development opportunities for both students and professionals.
• The Public Relations and Communications Association is a global public relations organization that provides professional training and development opportunities as well as sharing best ethical practices.  
• The Society for Cinema and Media Studies is the leading U.S. academic organization focusing on film, television, and related media.
• The Society of Professional Journalists provides an array of professional development opportunities and career support for both students and career journalists.
• The United States Hispanic Leadership Institute (USHLI) facilitates research, education and leadership and related initiatives in support of the interests of Latinos and other minority groups. It offers scholarships and student leadership training.
