Scholarships and Awards

Graduate student scholarships and awards include:

• Annie White Mell American Independence Award: Awarded annually to a graduate for the best original research paper in the field of American colonial history.
• Glenn Feldman Award: Awarded annually to PhD candidates conducting dissertation research.
• Colonial Dames Award: Awarded biennially (odd-numbered years) to a graduate for the best paper in colonial or early U.S. history.
• Donna J. Bohanan Graduate Award: Awarded annually to outstanding graduates, with preference given to those studying topics in European history.
• Edna Floyd Booth Award: Awarded annually to assist graduates with travel costs associated with thesis or dissertation research.
• Malcolm C. McMillan Award: Awarded biennially to recognize the outstanding scholarship produced by graduates.
• Marguerite E. Scharnagel Fellowship: Awarded annually to graduates in the final phases of dissertation writing.
• Melvin Kranzberg Award: Awarded annually to a graduate for outstanding scholarship in the history of technology.
• Milo B. Howard Research Award: Awarded annually to PhD candidates to support their dissertation research.
• Presidential Graduate Research Fellowship: A prestigious award for new students pursuing doctoral or terminal professional degrees at Auburn in support of their work in established or emerging areas of excellence.
• Robert L. Partin Award: Awarded annually to a graduate student for their exceptional service to the Department of History.

Application Instructions

For enrolled students, additional funding for participation in professional conferences and for thesis/dissertation research is available from the department through a competitive awards process. Other competitive opportunities for funding exist in the College of Liberal Arts, the Graduate School and at the University level.
