Promotion of Excellence in Teaching and Learning Awards (PETL)

NOMINATION DEADLINE: FRIDAY, JANUARY 31, 2025

CLA, through its Committee for the Promotion of Excellence in Teaching and Learning (PETL), has established the Academy of Outstanding Teachers to recognize those who have made outstanding contributions to the undergraduate teaching mission of the CLA and Auburn University. Membership in the Academy is lifetime.

Eligibility

Eligibility for nomination is limited to individuals who have worked at Auburn University for 10 or more years in a tenure track position. Rank is open. More than one individual may be nominated from any department in any given academic year. Nominees for membership in the Academy should be individuals who have established track records as excellent online teachers or who have otherwise made significant contributions to the teaching mission of the CLA or Auburn University (e.g., individuals who have developed innovative and effective teaching methods or departmental chairs/heads who have significantly advanced the cause of undergraduate teaching in any form). Individuals who are current members of the PETL Committee are not eligible for nomination.

Criteria

Nominees should demonstrate excellence in at least one of the following areas: (a) classroom teaching, (b) attracting undergraduates to fields represented by the liberal arts, (c) developing effective teaching methods, courses, and supporting materials, and (d) service learning.

Nomination and Selection Process

Individuals may be nominated by colleagues within CLA departments or by the CLA Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. The materials will be reviewed by the CLA PETL Committee to determine the new members of the Academy. No more than two individuals will be selected for membership in any one academic year.

Nomination Packets

Nomination packets must include the following materials: (a) no more than three letters of recommendation, one of which must be from a current or former student of the nominee  (b) a letter of nomination that describes, in detail, how the nominee has established a track record as an excellent classroom teacher or has otherwise made significant contributions to the teaching mission of the CLA or Auburn University, (c) the nominee’s curriculum vitae, and (d) the nominee’s statement of teaching philosophy, (e) copies of three recent teaching evaluations in full (including numerical data and written commentary from the entire class), and (f) copies of three course syllabi, preferably from the last three years.

Recognition

Eligibility

Eligibility is limited to faculty members who have not received a College of Liberal Arts Teaching or Advising Award in the previous five years and are not current members of the Committee for the Promotion of Excellence in Teaching and Learning.

Criteria

Nominees should demonstrate excellence in at least one of the following areas: (a) classroom teaching, (b) attracting undergraduates to fields represented by the liberal arts, (c) developing effective teaching methods, courses, and supporting materials, and (d) service learning.

Nominations and Selection Process

Nominations may be made by College of Liberal Arts students, faculty, and alumni. More than one individual may be nominated from any department. Letters of recommendation may be sent electronically to the nominator for inclusion in the nomination package. Typically multiple CLA Teaching Awards will be given per year, the number of awards being determined by available funding and the number of worthy candidates.

Nomination packets should contain the following materials: (a) a letter of nomination, (b) no more than three letters of recommendation, at least one of which must be from a current or former student of the nominee, (c) the nominee’s curriculum vitae, (d) the nominee’s statement of teaching philosophy, (e) copies of three recent teaching evaluations in full (including numerical data and written commentary from the entire class), and (f) copies of three course syllabi, preferably from the last three years.

More than one individual may be nominated from any department in any given academic year. Nominees for the award should be individuals who have established track records as excellent online teachers, or who have otherwise made significant contributions to the teaching mission of the CLA or Auburn University (e.g., individuals who have developed innovative and effective teaching methods).  Individuals who are current members of the PETL Committee are not eligible for nomination.

Criteria

Nominees should demonstrate excellence in at least one of the following areas: (a) online teaching and mentoring students, (b) effective and innovative online teaching methods, courses/programs, curricula, and supporting materials, and (c) exemplary contributions to the practice of online delivery and the teaching profession.

Nominations may be made by College of Liberal Arts students, faculty, and alumni. More than one individual may be nominated from any department. The materials will be reviewed by the CLA PETL committee who will select faculty for this award.

Nominees should demonstrate civic commitment and excellent teaching skills in meaningful experiential courses that support the development, retention, and graduation of civic-minded students.

More than one individual may be nominated from any department in any given academic year. Nominees for the award should be individuals who have established track records as excellent classroom teachers, or who have otherwise made significant contributions to the teaching mission of the CLA or Auburn University (e.g., individuals who have developed innovative and effective teaching methods).  There will be up to two awards granted each year.  Individuals who are current members of the PETL Committee are not eligible for nomination.

Criteria

Nominees should demonstrate excellence in at least one of the following areas: (a) classroom teaching, (b) developing effective teaching methods, courses, and supporting materials, and (c) distance learning.

Nomination and Selection Process

Nominations may be made by College of Liberal Arts students, faculty, and alumni. More than one individual may be nominated from any department. The materials will be reviewed by the CLA PETL committee who will select faculty for this award.

Eligibility

Eligibility is limited to GTAs who are currently enrolled and have served for two semesters or more as a teacher of record, laboratory assistant, or discussion section leader in CLA undergraduate courses (including studios). Previous winners of this award are not eligible to receive a second award.

Criteria

Nominees should meet some of the following criteria: (a) shows promise of excellence in teaching based on teaching effectiveness evaluations and student commentary, (b) uses innovative or creative teaching techniques, technologies, and methods, and (c) exhibits interest in professional development as a teacher as evidenced by publications related to teaching, attendance at teaching conferences or research conferences with teaching tracts, attendance at local workshops, and/or teaching enhancement activities on campus sponsored by the Committee for the Promotion of Excellence in Teaching and Learning or the Biggio Center.

Nomination and Selection Process

Individuals must be nominated by faculty members within the CLA. Typically no more than one GTA Teaching Award will be given per year.

Nomination Packets

Nomination packets must include: (a) a letter of nomination describing the nominee's qualifications for the award, (b) the nominee's statement of teaching philosophy, (c) at least one but no more the three course syllabi, (d) at least two but no more than three recent teaching evaluations, (e) a classroom observation report by a faculty member or administrator, and (f) a listing, on a separate page, of all the nominee's activities related to teaching and professional development as a teacher.

Eligibility

Eligibility is limited to CLA faculty members, department advisors, or advisors in CLA who have not received this award with the last five academic years and who are not currently serving on the PETL Committee.

Nomination and Selection Process

Nominations may be made by CLA students, faculty, and alumni. Typically no more than one Advising Award will be given per year. The materials will be reviewed by the CLA PETL Committee who will select an advisor or faculty member for this award.

Nomination Packets

Nomination packets must include: (a) a letter of nomination describing the nominee's qualifications for the award, (b) no more than three letters of recommendation, at least one of which must be from a current or former student advised by the nominee, and (c) the nominee’s curriculum vitae.
