Auburn Model UN among top teams at Southern Regional competition
The Auburn University Model United Nations team recently competed in the Southern Regional Model United Nations (SRMUN) competition in Atlanta. With 24 Auburn students competing this year, it was the largest number of delegates to attend the competition in recent history. The team represented the nations of Japan, Italy and Tunisia on a variety of simulated UN committees or conferences, such as UNESCO, the G-20 and the Security Council.
Auburn University is building a strong reputation as a formidable team in the Model UN circuit. All three Auburn delegations collectively earned an Honorable Delegation Award, placing among the top delegations at the competition and indicating a strong performance across the board from all Auburn delegates. Auburn University was the only school that had all delegations earn an award.
Individual delegate awards went to Gabriella LaRocca, team president and political science senior, and Colby Axelberd, team vice president, for their performances of Tunisia on the Council on the Status of Women (CSW) and Japan on the Security Council, respectively.
Other team members included Miller Workman, Olivia Addis, Victor Sutton, Max Van Horn, Georgia King, Blaire Gray, Carter Schatt, Eli Burnes, Rafael Olivier, Brennan Armstrong, Cal Floyd, Harrison Scott, Sara Barbato, Emma Pettey, River Dunlap, Ben Garner, Keith Mims, Wills Briskman, Eric Tran, Zarraf Shafi, Edward Wang and Yusuf Arik. Joanne Kim served as the assistant director for UNESCO, the first Auburn team member to serve on the SRMUN staff.
